The percentage on My path shows what share of the words in everyday speech - videos, books, chats - are words you know. Lalea takes the frequencies of the 40,000 most common word forms of the language (subtitles, books, the web), adds up those whose word you know, and counts names and titles as known. A form counts if you know its word: knowing "run" covers "ran" and "running". It is a measure of words, not a test of listening: fast speech and accents are a separate skill.

The film page counts the same way for one film, from its own subtitles: every word as many times as it is said, without names of characters and without words you ignore. Above 95% you follow almost every line; 85-95% is a good film for learning; below that, learn its most frequent new words first - a few of them make a large part of the film.

Why it works: speech is made mostly of a few thousand words. In English the 1,000 most frequent words cover about 80% of the words in a film, 3,000 - about 92%, 8,000 - about 97%.

Hedgehog stages - by the number of words you know: 100, 250, 500, 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, 5,000, 8,000, 12,000 and 20,000. Each stage shows what share its words cover in your language.

The Words tab in the player splits the words of one video by the same stages. Learn a video's new words from the most frequent group down: those few words are said again and again and pay off first, while a rare word may never come back.

Badges are given for real things: the first word and the first review, 100 and 1,000 words saved from videos, 50 words from one film, words from 10 films, streaks of 7, 30 and 100 days, the goal on 10 and 50 days, all first steps done. A new badge is shown once on Watch.
